The problem

The housing needed a bore held to 0.0003 in, concentric to an outside diameter, in titanium that likes to move when it warms up.

What we did

We moved the part to a Swiss-type lathe so it is supported right at the cut, finished the bore and outside diameter in the same clamp and added in-process gauging every tenth part.

The result

1,600 housings with a process capability of 1.67 on the bore, and the customer dropped their incoming inspection to a sample plan.

They caught a tolerance stack on our drawing before quoting. That one phone call saved us a failed first article.
